Additional Resources:

            Classification of Organisms

Trends in Animal Evolution – contains a section on symmetry

Classification of Organisms

Define/explain: domain, Archea, Bacteria, Eukarya, kingdom, Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animaliae, phylum, class, order, family, genus species, binomial nomenclature

You should be able to:

1.  List the three domains and the kingdoms within each domain

2.  List (in order) the categories used to classify organisms

3.  Understand the hierarchical nature of the classification system

4.  List the classification categories for humans

Kingdom Animaliae

Define/explain: heterotrophic, asymmetric, radial symmetry, bilateral symmetry,

You should be able to:

1.  Describe the general characteristics of animals

2.  Describe the characteristics and give an example of each of the following types of animals:

a.  animal with no symmetry

            b.  radially symmetrical animal

            c.  bilaterally symmetrical animal

3.  List the 10 major phyla of the animal kingdom and give an example organism from each phylum

4.  List the complete classification of humans

Animal Tissue Types

Define/explain:  tissue, epithelial, connective, nervous

You should be able to:

1.  List and define the four types of tissue found n animals

2.  List at least four types of connective tissue

3.  List and give a location for the three types of muscle tissue
