New Mexico State University Department of Biology Herbarium

Use of the herbarium - The NMSU herbarium will loan specimens to any researcher at universities or government agencies for use in taxonomic work. The collection is open to the public during normal business hours, and unrestricted access may be arranged after minimal orientation. Tours for native plant groups or public schools may be arranged in advance at mutually convenient times for the curator and the visitor. Information regarding specific genera or species will be provided upon request to anyone needing it for his or her research.
Loans - NMC welcomes loan requests from researchers working in conjunction with herbaria or governmental agencies. Please forward loan requests to Donovan Bailey in the Department of Biology via e-mail or letter. Every attempt will be made to process loan requests in a timely manner. Unless otherwise arranged, we request that the annotated loans be returned within two years.
Information requests – We have limited amount time and resources to process requests for information on specific taxa. Time consuming requests or requests that provide information that will used for-profit may incur a fee to offset the labor and materials. Please e-mail or mail requests to Donovan Bailey.

Donations - NMC runs on a fairly tight sometimes volatile budget. Generally we have enough funding for the basic materials necessary to keep to keep the herbarium functioning. However, donations to herbarium are greatly appreciated and these will help to ensure the herbarium continues to function well into the future. We are happy to use donations as necessary to fund student help or we can use the funds in specific accordance with the wishes of the person making the donation. Ultimately, donations specifically noted for the NMC endowment will provide NMC with stable funding in the future. If you have any questions about making a donation, please contact either Donovan Bailey or Richard Spellenberg.

Direction of growth - The goal for NMC is to continue to provide a quality regional and national resource. Given that the herbarium has limited funding we have elected to focus the growth of the general collection on accessions from New Mexico, surrounding states, the Chihuahua Desert, and the Sierra Madre Occidental of Mexico. In addition, we welcome any collections associated with specific NMSU faculty and graduate research projects. At present we would appreciate any collections of Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, or Nyctaginaceae.
