OVERVIEW
(Total: 300 points, earned in 3 parts as described below.)

 

You will be required to prepare a 3000-4000 word, typed, double-spaced, essay on a science and ethics topic. 

 

The term paper may be submitted in response to the Elie Wiesel Ethics competition http://www.eliewieselfoundation.org/prizeinethics.aspx . 

 

The essay paper must draw on sources available in our library or through interlibrary loan, and from the optional class readings. Paper requirements:

 

÷          The paper must articulate with clarity an ethical issue that you have encountered that relates to science.

÷          The paper must multiple viewpoints

÷          The paper must include at least 10 cited references

÷          The paper must include a statement of your ethical views regarding the topic and the rationale for your thinking.  

÷          The paper must analyze what this topic has taught you about ethics and yourself

 

 

 PART 3: FINAL TERM PAPER & BIBLIOGRAPHY

This is the hard deadline for the paper.  Please include a statement on the cover page about your wishes regarding the Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics competition by choosing one of these statements:

·        I would like to submit this paper to the Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics competition

·        I do not wish to submit this paper to the Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics competition

 

ESSAY GUIDELINES:

 

·         In 3,000 to 4,000 words identify the ethical dilemmas, issues and questions raised by the conduct of research or the implications of research for society.

·         You may write your paper in the first or third person, in a formal or informal voice, but above all, YOUR individual voice should be clearly identifiable.

·         Your essay may be developed from any point of view and may use an analysis that is biographical, historical, literary, philosophical, psychological, sociological or theological.

·         Your essay must be an original, unpublished work.

4.      The paper must address a CLEARLY ARTICULATED ETHICAL ISSU

5.      The paper must present MULTIPLE VIEWS 

6.     The paper should INCORPORATE THE PRINCIPLES AND LANGUAGE OF ETHICS as discussed in the class, (deontology, teleology, virtues, beneficence, rights, etc.)

7.      The paper should include a DISCUSSION of your ethical views regarding the topic, and the rationale for your thinking.

8.     The paper must INCLUDE A CONCLUDING PERSONAL STATEMENT THAT CONTAINS AN ANALYSIS about what this topic has taught you about ETHICS AND YOURSELF

10.  REFERENCES from the annotated bibliography must be INTEGRATED within the formal paper discussion.

 

GRADING  175 Points will be earned as follows:

 

Following instructions (20 points)

·        was the essay typed, double spaced, with one inch margins and all components (abstract, cover page, essay, biblio) included?

·        were the references discussed in the essay?

·        did you provide the concluding personal statement that contains an analysis about what this topic has taught you about ETHICS AND YOURSELF as requested?

·        Were ethical principles integrated into the text?

Composition (25 points)

·        was the ethical controversy under review clear?

·        were the paragraphs well organized, in a logical sequence?

·        was the abstract succinct and an effective summary of your essay?

·        was it easy to understand what the references were about?

·        Was your personal statement cogent?

Grammar (25 points)

·        was the spelling corrected? spellcheck can only help a little.

o        for example, spellcheck programs will accept there and their as correct, BUT only one of these will be appropriate in most sentences!

·        were grammatical rules followed?

o        for example, were the sentences complete, each with a noun and verb?

Scholarship (80 points)

·        was there a balanced presentation of multiple viewpoints?

·        was your “voice” apparent?

·        how well did you address the requirement to discuss what this topic has taught you about ETHICS AND YOURSELF?

·        was the essay of the required length?

·        how well did you integrate the different references into the discussion? was the significance of the references (or lack of!) made clear to the reader?

·        how well were ethical principles integrated into the essay?

·        what was the overall quality of the document? my judgment call!!!

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION:

Prepare a brief description of your paper. The instructor will use this to give you guidance for the final content of the term paper. 

SOURCES:

Submit a list of your preliminary sources. 

 

October 3 final version:

DESCRIPTION

Submit a typed, ~ 300 word abstract for your paper. In the abstract clearly limit and define the ethical theme you will address.

SOURCES.  Submit a list of at least 5 sources for the paper. (you will need 10 for the first draft)

·         If few sources are available in the NMSU library, identify potential books or journals in this topic area that are available through interlibrary loan.

·         Off campus sources should be requested in time for you to receive them for the first draft, probably by October 3.

·         Web sites may be included in your sources but a copy of the printout of the home page for the site must be included with the final bibliography in your essay paper.

 

Note: For the FIRST DRAFT, you will be required to SUBMIT an annotated bibliography on the subject of the term paper that will include at least 10 references widely distributed with respect to source type (books, websites and articles) and chronology (recent -last 10 years- and older sources).  It is strongly recommended that you draft this before  you begin to write the essay.

As part of your writing efforts for this class, you will be asked to rewrite and refine your paper. On Oct 17, You should hand in the first draft of your term paper.  Your paper will be critiqued and returned in time for you to refine and rewrite the paper.
