FORMAT SELECT YOUR THEMES JOURNAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR THEMES
- The journal should be in a looseleaf notebook or other bound format, neatly organized, and separated by assignment.
- The journal cover page should have the last five digits of your social security number but not your name!
- All entries must be typed and double-spaced!
- Journal 3 is comprised of several modules. You will need to complete two modules from a list of four theme options.
- OPTIONAL. It is STRONGLY recommended that you supplement your journal with other notes, web sites, thoughts, news clippings etc you may have assembled as part of the class assignments. This will be a valuable resource for YOU. I would enjoy seeing this if you wish to submit it for me to review.

MODULE ASSIGNMENTS FOR JOURNAL 3
(1) 20 points Prepare a 2-4 page summary of your group presentation. You may work together on this component.
(2) 20 points Prepare a 2-4 page essay that highlights the important issues raised by the other group presentations. What novel information was provided to you? In your opinion, what were the three most important ethical/social issues raised by the other group presentations?

(1) 20 points Prepare a 2-4 page summary of your group presentation. You may work together on this component.

- NUCLEAR WEAPONS
(1) 25 points. Prepare a 2-3 page essay that summarizes and comments on the material presented by Mr. Haas Discuss the ethical issues that were raised and identify those that were of most concern to you personally. Address the following questions:
(2) 15 points. Explore the site: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bomb/ and complete the following:
- The detonation of the bomb on Hiroshima or Nagasaki is still controversial to this day. What is your position? Do you believe that it was necessary to do so? Can you suggest alternatives?
- Do you support a nuclear test ban? Why or why not?
- Which nations/regions are considered most likely to detonate nuclear weapons?
- Who conducted human radiation experiments In the US? What issues were raised vy these studies?
- Research the aftermath of a nuclear detonation on two cities of your choice such as would be typical if the following were deployed. A) 1 megaton B) 25 megaton. What would be the effects on life at Ground Zero? 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 100 miles away? What would happened over a one week period? What is a nuclear winter? What would it take to produce one?
- View film footage of the blasts. Which was the most terrifying image to you? Why? If the images did not affect you, state so.
- Take the panic quiz. What did you think?
- Go to the nuclear weapons test map. Where are most of the weapons being tested? Who is being most affected by nuclear weapons testing?
- CHEMICAL & BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS
