Format

You should approach the DEBATE assignment with a spirit of skeptical inquiry and with the intention of lively and reasoned debate!

Plan on 30 minutes total. Be as creative as you wish to be to get your points across.  Bring in overheads, pictures etc.

Here are some links with info to help you get going in organizing your debate.  You may wish to have the first group speak and have thesecond group ready to respond to the first speaker from the opposing group.

Participant Duties:
 
Moderator: organizes the group meetings to prepare the presentation, and leads the presentation to the class, handles questions, ensures orderly and civil debate. Should prepare a BRIEF introduction as to why this topic is important. Your goal is organize and oversee a polished debate.

Debators: research and present the main arguments on the two positions. It does not matter whether you personally believe what you are arguing, rather that you can present the arguments made by those that do believe in the position. Your goal is to sway the audience to your side.

Audience: listens attentively and skeptically, prepares questions, evaluates which side made the most compelling arguments. If you have an opinion about the topic, bear in mind that it may or may not be the case that the team that made the best points, argued in favor of your position!
