INTERNET NEUROSCIENCE   SEARCHES  (70 pts)

1.     (10 pts) Visit the Society for Neuroscience on the Net at http://www.sfn.org/   and complete the following assignments:

1. Find the Journal of Neuroscience on line. Browse the issues. Select 3 abstracts and download them. Submit the abstracts with a brief (one paragraph) explanation of why you downloaded these articles.
2. Visit the Brain Briefings Site http://www.sfn.org/briefings/. List the five articles that interest you the most and briefly (one paragraph) explain why these topics caught your eye.

2.    (10 pts) Visit the NIH site at http://www.nih.gov.

1. What is NIH? Visit one of the institutes and report on the kinds of neuroscience research that it funds. Why did you choose this institute?
2. Visit the CRISP database https://www-commons.cit.nih.gov/crisp/. Use the query form to find grants from NIH that are funded at NMSU. Submit three abstracts with a brief (2-3 sentences) explanation of why you downloaded these articles. (Hint: search using NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY LAS CRUCES to list all grants)

3.     (6 pts) Visit Neuroinformatics: the Human Brain Project: (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/neuroinformatics/index.cfm) What is this project about? Check out the research projects site. Summarize the goals of TWO of the projects.

4.     (20 pts) Visit NCBI at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

1.  What is NCBI?
2. Find GenBank on the NCBI home page and answer the following:: What is GenBank? Search GenBank using a text based search for ONE of the following three topics: / potassiumchannel / myelin / serotonin / How many postings did you find?
3. Download a listing from your GENBANK search that is interesting to you. What information does it contain? Visit the Genes and Diseases site at NCBI. What diseases are listed under Nervous System? under TRANSPORTERS, CHANNELS AND PUMPS?
4. Visit Pubmed http://www4.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/ from NCBI Home. What is posted on this site? How many articles do you find if you query with the word "neuron"?

6.     (10 pts)  Visit the Medline drug information site: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/. What information is posted about drugs on this site? Search under "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors". List five compounds that fall under this category. What do these drugs treat?

7.     (4 pts)  Visit the site http://jaxmice.jax.org/index.shtml.What does this company sell? Find Neurology news under JAX Mice Library. What products are offered to treat neural diseases?
 

NMSU LIBRARY  SEARCHES (20 pts)

1.     (3 pts) Go to http://lib.nmsu.edu:80/article.html on the NMSU library home page. List five electronic databases that are available on the internet.

2.     (3 pts) Go to the LANL SciSearch database. Search the 1993 database for papers using keywords humanAND brain. How many papers did you find? Complete the same search for 1997 and 2001 and compare with 1993.

4.     (4 pts) List the titles and abstracts of three papers from SciSearch and explain (briefly), why they interested you. Are they available in our library?

5.     (3 pts) Find the Neuroscience section(s) of the library. Under what call numbers are Neuro books shelved? List the titles of three books that catch your eye.

6.     (3 pts) Find the Neuroscience journals in the library. What are the call numbers? List the titles of three journals.

7.     (3 pts) How do you get an article that is not in the library? How long does it usually take?

8.     (1 pt)  How much does the library charge to xerox a page?
