Student Opportunities Overview

Students, both graduates and undergraduates, have many different opportunities for research, learning, and even funding within and outside the Biology Department. This overview might help you find the option that best fits your needs.

Research Opportunities

Working Hard
The Classroom Experience
Research opportunities are available for grads and undergrads alike. Undergraduates can work in research laboratories for credits towards their degrees and/or for compensation, where he latter is strictly dependent on the professor running the lab. If an undergraduate student is interested in gathering research experience he/she should contact the professor of interest to see if any more students are being accepted into the lab. Research foci for faculty members can be found HERE.

Graduate students who would like to pursue a thesis option PhD or Masters degree are required to list their three top options of PIs in their applications to the department (find the application packet HERE). If, however, a student is pursuing a non-thesis masters degree, acceptance into a lab somewhat works the same way as for undergraduates (see above).

Finally, there are several research programs for undergraduates available at New Mexico State University. These programs encourage students to work in a certain field and prepare students for future carreers or further study. Please see the list of programs available HERE.

Teaching Opportunities

The Department of Biology offers teaching opportunies in forms of teaching assistantships (for graduate students) and in form of undergraduate BioCats (undergraduates teaching workshops for introductory biology courses). BioCat positions as well as teaching assistantships have to be formally requested each year.
