Research Background/Interests

I am primarily interested in improving the public’s health. My master’s work centered on reproductive and maternal/child health, ultimately resulting in my thesis that explored the effects of maternal opioid analgesic use on infant outcomes. My current doctoral research is focused on utilizing FDA approved antibiotics as novel therapies in the treatment of viral infections, specifically Flaviviruses. Arthropod-borne viruses, including Flaviviruses, are a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. There are no approved antivirals for any arthropod-borne viral infection meaning there is a clear, unmet need for effective antiviral medications. The potential to use already approved medications that double as effective antivirals can expedite the process of providing patients with necessary antivirals faster than the traditional route of developing new, not yet approved medications.
